FOUNDATIONS

The Foundations Committee is preparing to review all this year’s eligible Scholarship Notebooks on Monday evening, May 19, 2003 at 5:30 pm. We will meet at Morgan Stanley, Megan O’Donnell’s office, at 305 S. Sequim Avenue. It is across the street from Jeanne Martin’s office.

First, we will have some dinner and then review the submitted books for scholarship awards. If you would like to participate in this endeavor, we would love to have your help. We are expecting approximately 50 notebooks and could use your input and help in this activity that defines our club. It is a time to join your Soroptimist Sisters in service and in fun, as you learn about some of the wonderful young students in our community. Please call Megan @ 681-2685 or send her e-mail at Megan.O’Donnell@morganstanley.com. Hope to see many of you there!

RELAY FOR LIFE

We will be in partnership with the Port Angeles Soroptimist clubs for the upcoming American Cancer Society Relay For Life. Please mark your calendars for June 6-7th ; we have registered twelve people for the event. There is certainly the opportunity to add more members to our team. The event will take place at the Port Angeles High School track starting at 6 PM.

The theme this year is “Carnival”. Please put on your creative thinking caps to help us plan on decorations for our campsite on the track. There will be lots of games, contests, food and raffles going on during this 24 hour marathon. Bring a few extra dollars to participate in these fundraising activities.

There will be a Relay store that has Relay “gear” and other fun Relay For Life logo items. Luminaria bags and donation forms will be available at our next meeting on April 15th.

You are invited to join us as we review

There will be a special ceremony to light these candles for friends and loved ones that have had cancer.

Olympic Crest Coffee Roasters is offering Relay participants a new fundraiser this year. If we are interested, we can sell bags of coffee and raise $4.00 per bag.

The Relay coffee is packaged in a purple foil decorated bag with the Relay For Life logo. We can resell the coffee to family members, co-workers and friends for $10.00 per bag.

The goal is to have each participants raise money for cancer research. As Sherry Schubert mentioned at one of our meetings, she has already had $2000.00 pledged for her participation in the Relay. I also have a sample letter that explains to family and friends why you are walking in the Relay For Life and asking for a donation. We can offer to walk in honor of their loved ones. We are masters of fundraisers!
WIN ACTIVITIES

Women In Trades
We are planning a trip to the Women In Trades Fair, April 11, 2003. Anyone interested in joining us please contact Kathy Purcell.

Washington State University

Cathy Angel is coordinating a WIN trip to Washington State University. Cathy talked with Tracy Ridgeway who has scheduled to be in Pullman for our WIN trip from 4/27-4/29. Tracy will also be there the end of March and suggests she organize our itinerary with her WSU contacts in the same general format as our last trip. Tracy is not sure how the war will impact our ability to tour the vet. hospital/school, but she will work on a hospital tour, a vet school tour, attendance at a vet school class/lab, campus tour and meetings with the admissions/financial aid folks, pretty much the same as our prior trip. Tracy will confirm our itinerary following her visit to WSU late in March. Tracy said unless we have made any specific plans with WSU contacts, it will be easier for her to plan the itinerary. We are estimating 10 – 12 students for this trip.

I will have the Participation Packets at our next meeting and the Walk Schedule that is divided into 30 minute segments. Obviously, you can come and stay as long as you like and cheer for the Soroptimist teams. If you are unable to be an active participate in the Relay, I hope you will pledge your support. The Relay is a unique, challenging and fun way to support vital cancer research.
