Letter from the Editor
Dear Friends:

Has life ever thrown you a curve? Maybe when life seems that way, we just need to think straight to get its message.

Recently I made the decision to join Curves for Women (the first place to offer 30 minute fitness and weight loss facilities designed for women). One Tuesday after work I went in to find out the details and to sign up. As the Curves representative asked me the questions on the new member form, I looked up and saw a sister Soroptimist. We waved to each other and smiled. Part of the initial visit – once you’ve decided to embark on this journey – is to get weighed and have your measurements taken. It’s a real awakening when you see the figures of your figure on paper. During the process of my initial visit, I saw four Soroptimists. The Curves representative said, “Wow! You know everyone.” I laughed. In some way we are all part of one another.

I was a bit nervous about making the Curves commitment; you have to motivate yourself to show up. But the next day after work, I showed up at Curves. Another Soroptimist was there. The Curves representative explained each piece of equipment and how to use it. You go through the “circuit” (one cycle around) three times. Then you do some stretching exercises. I did my three rounds and my stretching. I left feeling invigorated!

Since then I have seen many more SI Sequim members at Curves. This morning, I saw Patricia and Jane there. I joked that maybe we could have a Soroptimist meeting at Curves. We all laughed. When I got home this morning from Curves, I was thinking of the article I needed to write for our Soropti-Scoop. A thought came to mind of a friend whose dad had often told her how important it is to “show up.” That reminded me that Cheryl Jones, the keynote speaker at the 5th WIN Kick-Off last year, had said: “Just show up.” This is a famous quotation we should all keep in mind.

The 2002 – 2003 Soroptimist year is gearing up. Our first meeting will be September 10th. Wow! Where did the summer go? It is still here – in our many memories. As we remember those times, let us also remember to “show up” to life. When we show up, when we participate, we grow individually and as a group. We get that ‘invigorating’ feeling! The more often we show up, the more UP we have to show.

So if something occurs in your life that seems like a ‘curve,’ show up anyway. See you when you show up at the next Soroptimist meeting.

Light and Love,
