GRANT OF FRIENDSHIP
One of the five identifying projects/awards of the Northwestern Region, SIA, is the Grant of Friendship program which makes the "international" in Soroptimist a reality for those clubs that choose to participate. Started in 1990, the program is based on the third Soroptimist objective, "to develop a spirit of friendship and unity among Soroptimists of all countries." Discoveries about other countries and cultures are made -- many times we find out that we are not all that different. Our clubs face many similar challenges -- one being recruitment and retention -- no matter where we are in the world.

FRIENDSHIP LINKS

The practice of creating liaisons between Soroptimist clubs has existed since the 1930s, and since then the concept has steadily gained popularity. Soroptimist clubs can independently set up Friendship Links with other Soroptimist clubs throughout the world by writing to a club in a specific area to see if they might be interested in corresponding and sharing their culture. This program offers clubs the opportunity to learn about others' lifestyles and cultures. There is no limit as to the number of Friendship Links a club may have -- some have one, two, three, or even up to five. However, a club must nurture the relationship with the link(s), taking on only what they can comfortably handle.

Soroptimist International of the Americas offers Friendship Links as a model program for the International Goodwill and Understanding service area. As a model program, individual clubs can determine their level of participation, if any. A model program kit for Friendship Links can be obtained from Federation headquarters which offers complete guidelines for initiating and sustaining Friendship Links, including a project partnering component to assist clubs in performing joint service projects.
