GRANT OF FRIENDSHIP
Auf Wiedersehen

I’ll be leaving for my German Grant of Friendship visit in one week. During the past few months, I have been in contact with the President of the German union – Dr. Sigrid Erlenbruch and Petra Korbacher. They have planned a wonderful itinerary and I will be visiting eleven clubs plus participating in the chartering of a new club in Muenster. The first person I will stay with (Mildred) is an opera singer. I plan to bring a cassette tape and the music for the Soroptimist Symphony. I hadn’t heard of it until the regional meeting in Portland.

The Grant of Friendship is based on the third Soroptimist objective, “to develop a spirit of friendship and unity among Soroptimist of all countries.” I feel honored and privileged to have the opportunity to share the spirit from SI of Sequim.

I hope to be in Email contact during my tour; I’d like to send a few pictures and a note.

FOUNDATIONS   COMMITTEE

The Foundation Committee is pleased to announce the recipients of our three Continuing Education Scholarships.  They are:

Cheryl Watters is working on her AA degree at Peninsula College and is pursuing a
degree in education.  She graduated from Sequim High School in 1972 and is a widow.
Her husband’s medical costs were extensive and she’s appreciative of the help.

Melissa Moores graduated from Sequim High School in 1999 and is working towards her
bachelor’s degree in elementary education through City University.  The program is based
in Bellevue but takes place at Peninsula College.  She’s proud of the fact that she made
        the Dean’s List last quarter.

Cheryl Newlin is a 1982 graduate of Sequim High School and is currently enrolled in the
Medical Assistant program at Peninsula College.  She is a single mother raising five
children.  Financial help means that she won’t need to work at her Home Health job quite
so many hours which will reduce the stress on she and her children.

There were 20 applicants for these 3 scholarships which made selection very difficult.  The basic criteria for applicants was to be a Sequim High School graduate or reside in the Sequim school district.  It was also necessary to have completed one year or equivalent of college.  Applicants were asked to describe their course of study, educational achievements, career goals, etc.  They were then asked to relate why they needed financial help.

It was a joy to read all of the applications.  As always, one wishes you could award each a scholarship!!
