Dear Soroptimists,
As we begin 2003, I realize that half my term as president is now history.
It has gone fast, as time has a way of doing. Thank you for working
together as a club and together with clubs throughout the world to accomplish
service and strive to make a difference in our world.
Committees have worked hard this year to define goals, seek
to do things differently and strive to accomplish the work. I so appreciate
the leadership of all the committees, without you, the club does
not function.
I think of Diane Jones and the Foundations Committee for
the promotion of Violet Richardson and Womens Opportunity Awards.
I cannot think of a recent year when we have had so many applicants
to choose from. These ladies worked very hard to get the applications
where the applicants would have access to them. This committee has also
submitted these winning applications to the region, which fulfills a
goal of mine.
I think of Colleen Blazier and the Health Committee and the reorganization
of the Medical Loan Closet. Hours of work have gone into this project
to address safety issues, liability and maintenance of equipment. This
committee has also submitted a Program Focus Report to the region and
is looking into helping with a regional event Relay for Life.
You will hear more about this event soon.
I think of Kathy Purcell and WIN committee members who continue to work
throughout the year to organize meaningful programs and outings for
Sequim High School girls. The kickoff dessert was inspirational
and gives our community a glimpse of who we are as Soroptimists. This
committee also worked hard to complete a Program Focus Report to pass
on to region.
I think of Jenny Dix and the Goodwill and Understanding Committee who
presented a wonderful program to explore the possibility of linking
with an overseas club in a Grant of Friendship. They also presented
updates of international projects, which helps us to understand our
world.
I think of Jeanne Martin of the Audit Committee who on short notice
filed our first ever 990 IRS form. It was much like a Watergate break-in
to accomplish this task, but it was accomplished.
I think of Debra Danielson and the Hospitality Committee who worked
to serve our members in providing food and entertainment for our Holiday
Party. The harp music and catered food was delightful and
we all felt pampered in a very busy season.
I think of Alex Priest and the Growth and Development Committee
who has all ready brought in four new members. Who could resist the
enthusiasm of Alex? Shes a Soroptimist through and
through.
I think of Ruth Marcus and Carol Blake with the Attendance/Rooster Committee.
Ruth contributed many hours of her summer to preparing this years
roster. Carol organizes and works to make attendance and check-in at
meetings organized and hassle free, even if she has to run down the
president to remind her to pay!!!
I think of Kathy Purcell as editor of the On Line Newsletter who
chronicles our Soroptimist life. She has a gentle way of reminding us
of our responsibilities to supply her with information.
And finally, I think of the board of directors who commit to an extra
meeting each month to manage the affairs of the club. This group, particularly
the treasurers work long hours for your benefit.
Leadership is a requirement of a service club and I applaud those who
have committed to it. If I neglected to mention your committee
it is because your work comes in the second half of our year.
There is much to do and it takes commitment and perseverance.
Thank you for partnering with me as Soroptimists!
President Leah
