Legislative
Lobbyist Harvey Mathews spoke about the power of groups and how effectively
our international group of women can influence the outcome of important
issues. He was an interesting, entertaining and inspiring speaker
encouraging local Soroptimist groups to become more involved in community
issues. There was a break-out group that he led where he discussed how
to make the best impact. Governor Dede Olsen awarded certificates of accomplishment/recognition for many activities in our region. She emphasized that many of the awards had little-to-no submissions and we, as a local group, could receive greater recognition and results from our volunteerism if we stayed in closer contact with Region. This can be accomplished by actively perusing the NW Region Soroptimist Newsletter and web site. The internet site is www.soroptimistnwr.com. The North West Region website has forms for submission now. This allows us to access and download all forms 24/7 and can help us learn more about what opportunities exist for matching funds, etc., from Region. The entertainment on Saturday evening was Leigh Anne Jasheway. She talked about how humor can make all the difference in the world in dealing with stress, both physically and mentally. She was hilarious and very convincing. Ideas were shared on different fundraising possibilities that other groups have found to be successful. The Anacortes club won an award for most successful fundraiser last year with a Mardi Gras party and they have a Toga Party fundraiser planned for this year. A new directory (known as the yellow pages) will be available soon that will give the names of all Soroptimist’s and their businesses, allowing us to do business with our Soroptimist SISters from all over the U.S. if we choose to!
