On April 11, 2003 Mitzi Sanders and I spent the day
with 19 WIN girls – it was a trip to the Women In Trades Fair
in Seattle. I was excited because it was the first time I was able to
get off from work to spend a day with WIN students! We were supposed
to meet the bus driver in front of the main building of the high school
for a 7:00 a.m. departure. Although I had set the alarm for 6:00 a.m.,
that morning my dog Kona woke me up at 5:00! Kona must have wanted to
make sure he got his regular morning walk. Or maybe he knew I was looking
forward to the WIN trip.
I
arrived at the high school at 6:45 a.m. There was one other car in the
lot. The bus was nowhere in sight. Did I get the meeting place wrong?
Or had the bus just not arrived yet? Five minutes later the bus pulled
into the driveway. A few minutes later other cars started showing up,
including one that Mitzi was driving. I had not attended one of these
functions before, so all of it was new and I didn’t know what
to expect. While
the girls chatted amongst themselves, Mitzi brought me up to date on
what’s been happening at the school. She mentioned that the Junior
Prom was coming up the following night. Ah, that brings back fond memories.

After we got on the ferry Jane announced that we could go upstairs but everyone had to be back on the bus by the time the ferry docked in Seattle – or they’d have to find the bus once it was off the ferry. There’s no waiting for passengers when vehicles need to disembark. Everyone made it back to the bus in time. The girls showed they are responsible young women. I had never been to Seattle Center or up close to the Space Needle. I was as much a rookie as some of the girls. In previous years, the Women In Trades Fair had offered information on career choices – many non-traditional, as well as hands-on activities to give women a chance to experience a bit of what is involved in a specific job. These were big favorites for the girls; climbing a telephone pole is the one that was mentioned the most. This year was different. There weren’t the hands-on activities. Liability issues played a key role in the change. This was disappointing. ![]() Checking it out. |
