Because of the way things were this year, Mitzi decided to have a contest
that would make the girls think and keep their eyes open. She divided
the girls into teams of four. Each team was to make a list of all the
professions they saw while in Seattle. It was supposed to be someone
they saw, not just any profession they could think of. One of the girls
asked if she saw an airplane, could she put “pilot” on her
list. Mitzi said yes.
Some
of the girls took out paper and pen to start their team lists. I saw
a man with two dogs. (As a dog lover if there’s a dog around,
I usually catch sight of it, smile, and often make a comment.) “How
about dog walker,” I suggested to one of the groups. They wrote
it down. In order to not show favoritism, I made suggestions to each
group. |
We
spent some time at the base of the Space Needle, waiting for a couple
of the girls who had decided to go up to the top. There was a magician
close by that captured the attention and laughter of many of the girls.
![]() Cortney Obregon seemed dedicated to working on the team’s list of “professions.” I half jokingly said, “There are a lot of people walking by. Why don’t you ask them what they do for a living?” Cortney liked the idea, inviting a few of her teammates to go along with her to do some interviews. I was so impressed with Cortney’s attitude. She wasn’t sure the idea would work, but she still took action and tried it. That was inspiring to me. |

Several
girls got a lesson in safety while dressing in the appropriate gear.
As Megan Obregon was changing out of the safety gear, she commented,
“This is fun. I never would have done this.” Her comment
made me smile. Brittnie had stepped outside her normal comfort zone
and found life offered a worthwhile experience. This is one of the best
rewards for me as a supporter of the WIN Program. It shows that we DO
make a difference.

We
also rode on the monorail, had lunch, and even made it to Pike Place
Market. We had about 20 minutes there because we had to get back to
the bus. I noticed that many of the girls purchased flowers at Pike
Place Market. Not only were the flowers pretty, they had a nice fragrance.
It added to the beauty of the entire experience. I hope the girls enjoyed
and learned as much as I did. Perhaps for our next field trip some of
my Sister Soroptimists would like to go along and share in the experience.
